Abhyanga
ABHYANGA means: application of a lubricant on every body part or body direction,
using mainly simple oil or medicated oil in specific cases, according to constitution,
age, season, disease and atmosphere. Abhyanga prevents and corrects the aging
processes, promoting longevity, vigor and health. |

Padabhyanga (massage
to the foot sole)
The foot soles are strictly connected with eyes
and ears. Massage on the foot sole treats dryness, numbness
and dulling, roughness and fatigue, lack of sensitiveness,
skimming on foot soles, sciatica, cramps, contractions of
ligaments, blood vessels and muscles of lower limbs. Massage
on the foot sole helps digestion and sleep.

Udvartana (oiling)
This kind of massage is carried out by applying
a paste on the body and leaving it dry a little before delicately
rubbing it away. It eliminates the bad smell of the body,
treats heaviness, drowsiness and itch. It helps the elimination
of fat and promotes a healthy skin.

Netra Basti (Akshitarpana)
Netra in Sanskrit means eye. Netra Basti means the application of ghee on
the eye. The eye must be covered with a dense mixture, about 3.8 cm high
and 2.5 cm wide, in order to form a protective layer around it.
The space between skin and the mixture must be tightly sealed. The patient
is asked to close his eyes. The temperature of ghee should be checked before
pouring it on the eyes of the patient. The patient is finally asked to slightly
move his eyes, keeping his head still.

Karna purana (application
of oil in the ears)
Karna purana means the application of oil in the
ears. Ears and eyes are strictly connected with the foot
sole. The application of oil in the ears produces a cooling
effect which eliminates the sensation of burning to the feet.
This type of massage can treat various diseases typical of
organs, such as headache, blocked jaw, stiff neck and dizziness.
It is useful also for tooth and gum diseases.

Nasya
It is one of the five methods of purification (panchakarma). Here Nasya will
be explained only in relation to massage.
Nasya means the application of medicines through the nose. Nose is the only sense
organ connected directly to the brain. Nose and skull are full of important marma
points. Nasya can be a complete therapy by itself, because it is a method of
purification which eliminates the imbalances between doshas: vitiated doshas
are physically expelled from the body. |

Taila
Dhara (application of oil on the head)
It is one of the best-suited therapies to treat diseases
associated to the head, neck, ears, nose, throat and nervous
system. It helps to cure people who seriously suffer from insomnia,
schizophrenia and epilepsy. A certain quantity of oil is constantly
poured on the head of the patient, between his eyebrows. If
oil is used this massage is called “taila dhara”,
otherwise if milk is used it is called “takra dhara”.
